I came across this campaign while I was actually sitting in the movie theater about to watch the Sound of Freedom. A short but emotional compilation of home videos play about a little girl growing up. As the video goes on it shows how social media is influencing this little girl and hurting her self-image. This eventually develops into an eating disorder as shown later on in the video. Dove created this campaign as a way to help spread awareness about the Kids Online Safety Act that is being revised in 2023. This campaign speaks emotional volumes on how social media is hindering children's emotional development and creating anxieties and insecurities in developing children and teenagers. Dove wants to help change the "beauty standards" that we all hold ourselves up to as this is a factor in these kinds of mental health issues. According to Dove, "8 in 10 youth mental health specialists say that social media is fueling the mental health crisis." Social media is designed to keep the users active for as long as possible. This along with many other concerns such as decreased child privacy settings are putting children and teenagers at higher risks of developing anxiety, depression, and encountering dangerous situations on the internet. I highly encourage you to check out the video and sign the #KidsOnlineSafety Petition to help Dove make social media a safer environment for children, teenagers, and future generations.
